Vocabulary: The Vehicle to the Art of Seeing
Imagine a first-grader saying that her dad's doctor is a charlatan or a third grader exclaiming to her mother, "Look at those Doric columns!" Precocious children, you are probably thinking, but they are not. They are, quite simply, children of average abilities who have been involved in an exciting vocabulary program that, while furnishing them with a wide range of useful and interesting words, also opens their eyes to words -- and the world -- around them. For instance, why is a television company called "Magnavox?" A camper, "Vagabond?" A mattress, "Posturpedic?" An automoblie, a "Maverick?" and a sports team, the "New York Knickerbockers?"
