Elinor's book will inspire all parents, whether homeschooling or not, for her intuitiveness and constructive ideas for educating children. I was particularly impressed by her insistence that students learn to use their "awakened eyes" to observe features of their natural and built world. Her unique approach to children's understanding Joyce Kilmer's poem Trees, "The Big Sit," the most unusual field trip and research project I have ever encountered, the detailed instructions and supporting vocabulary for dozens of interdisciplinary science and social studies topics, along with her lessons on correct grammar, "101 Ways to Prepare For a Writing Assignment," and original math projects will be useful for years of instruction.

A Banner Experience
The arrival of Banner's 25th anniversary in 2007 spurred me to write my memoirs (12-chapters,175-page) starting with the how and the why I founded the school. I explain how I discovered the building where the school started on S. Jefferson Street, oversaw its remodeling, dealt with a broad array of bureaucrats, hire teachers, enrolled students and furnished the classrooms. I track the school's growth over the next ten years, describing our many interesting activities and unusual curriculum.
I recount Banner's remarkable spread throughout the Frederick community before finally getting grades k-8 together at the Odd Fellows' site in 1992. The appendix contains the songs we sang in assemblies, the challenges for which students earned badges and the vocabulary we used for science and social studies classes.
I enjoyed pulling all this together and hope that you will appreciate my tale and the many teachers and parents who made The Banner School the reality it is today. Elinor (elinormiller@seepub.com).
